DNS Management

Business Value

DNS (Domain Name System) is a critical component of the internet infrastructure, responsible for translating human-readable domain names into machine-readable IP addresses. The health status of DNS is crucial for ensuring the availability and accessibility of online services. A healthy DNS ensures that users can reach websites and applications without issues, which is essential for business continuity and customer satisfaction.

Solution

To detect the health status of DNS(non-Kubed), we employ a multi-faceted approach using Thousandeyes for network monitoring and MCT as a Synthetic Monitoring tool.

Thousandeyes

Thousandeyes is used to monitor DNS resolution times and reachability. The following metrics are monitored:

  1. Resolution Time: We monitor the time it takes to resolve webex.com to ensure it is within an acceptable range. A resolution time ≥ 200 ms indicates potential issues.
  2. Reachability and Path Changes: We track the reachability of webex.com and monitor path changes over time. A reachability of < 100% and more than 1 path change per 15 minutes may indicate DNS issues.

MCT

MCT is used for Synthetic Monitoring of DNS. The following clusters are monitored:

  1. DNSAPI cluster: This cluster is responsible for DNS key components, ensuring that DNS queries are processed correctly.
  2. DNS_INFOBLOX cluster: This cluster handles DNS queries geographically, ensuring that DNS resolution is accurate and efficient across different regions.
